Inlay & Onlays

For hardwearing, good-looking repairs.

Inlays and onlays are durable, long-lasting restorations for cavities that may be difficult to repair with a normal filling. An inlay fits neatly within a cavity, whereas an onlay covers more of the biting surface of the tooth and is suitable for larger cavities. Traditionally, gold was used to make inlays and onlays as it is such a hardwearing, yet malleable, metal. Modern materials now include porcelain and composite resin as they provide a more natural-looking result.

Impressions are taken of your teeth and used by a dental technician to create custom-made inlays or onlays. While waiting for these, you will have a temporary filling to protect the prepared tooth. When ready, your inlay or onlay will be fixed firmly in place with a dental adhesive.

Innovative digital technology means inlays and onlays can now be made in the dental practice in just one visit, using CEREC – a special milling machine. This cuts down on the number of appointments and avoids the need for a temporary restoration.
