Root canal treatment

Tooth preserving therapy.

If the inner part of your tooth, the pulp, becomes infected as result of tooth decay or damage, root canal treatment (or endodontics) can prevent the infection from spreading. If not treated, this infection can cause a painful abscess and the tooth may need to be extracted.

Our dentists use special techniques and equipment to carry out this tooth saving treatment. Despite often being considered a painful treatment, you will have a local anaesthetic and the procedure should be similar to having a normal filling.

After removing the infection, the root canals are flushed clean and filled to prevent any further infection. A temporary filling is placed and, during a later appointment, the tooth is checked for any remaining infection. When the tooth is clear, it is permanently filled. Root canal treatment is an intricate procedure that takes skill to execute and most courses of treatment will require two or more visits.

We recommend you attend regular hygiene appointments and dental check-ups to avoid the possibility of infection.
