Mouth cancer screening

A lifesaving check.

Cases of mouth (oral) cancer are on the rise but early detection can make it much more treatable, which is why we carry out screening during routine appointments. This involves a thorough examination of your mouth and the use of a handheld scanning device to assess any unusual lumps or lesions.

Screening is recommended at least once a year but if you do discover any sores, lumps or ulcers that don’t heal, you should have them checked.

Late detection of mouth cancers have resulted in around 2,700 deaths per year in the UK, which is a proportionally higher number of deaths per cases than breast, cervical or skin cancer.

We also encourage any of our patients who smoke to try to give up because tobacco use is strongly linked to many types of cancer, as well as other dental conditions. If you would like further information about this increasingly prevalent disease, the Mouth Cancer Foundation can help.
